EME Power Systems Supports Major Lincoln Electricity Network Upgrade

EME Power Systems has successfully delivered a key infrastructure project supporting National Grid Electricity Distribution's (NGED) ongoing programme to modernise electricity networks in Lincoln, helping pave the way for a more resilient and future-ready power supply.


The project formed part of NGED's wider strategy to retire sections of a historic 6.6kV electricity network and replace ageing infrastructure with modern systems designed to improve reliability and long-term performance.

As two ageing 33kV/6.6kV primary transformers approached retirement, several high-voltage metered customers required transfer onto the existing 11kV distribution network. Having maintained two of the affected customer networks for several years, EME Power Systems was appointed to carry out the critical modifications required to enable the transition.

The works ranged from straightforward system alterations to more extensive engineering challenges. At one site, modifications included high-voltage isolation works, replacement of TLF fuses and transformer reconfiguration to support operation on the new 11kV network.

At a second location, engineers faced a more demanding task. Existing transformers, some of which were approximately 70 years old, could not support the transition and required complete replacement. Uncertainty around the condition and capability of the site's existing high-voltage cable infrastructure also led to the installation of around 250 metres of new HV cable alongside the existing route.

Working closely with specialist lifting contractors and civil engineering partners, EME successfully installed a new transformer within a historic substation building. To minimise operational impact, all works were carefully planned and completed outside normal customer operating hours.

EME Power Systems was also called upon to support a third network conversion project. Following detailed intrusive surveys, a new cast resin transformer was installed during a planned shutdown, with internal low-voltage connections modified and additional transformer systems reconfigured to integrate seamlessly into the upgraded 11kV network.

Over the course of a tightly managed two-week programme with multiple planned shutdowns, the project was delivered safely and successfully, highlighting the importance of detailed planning, technical expertise and close collaboration among all parties involved.

Projects such as these play a vital role in ensuring ageing electricity infrastructure continues to evolve to meet future demands. By modernising networks today, utilities can strengthen resilience, improve reliability and provide customers with a more sustainable and maintainable electricity supply for years to come.
