From Emergency Response to Full Turnkey Solution
28th July 2025
EME Power Systems were recently asked for help following a fault on 11Kv switchgear caused a total loss of supplies to a business park with numerous tenants. Having once been a site requiring a high authorised supply capacity to function, the overall electrical demand had now decreased dramatically, however the original, aged Hv electrical infrastructure was still in place and being utilised.
After fault maintenance on the switchgear deemed it no longer fit for purpose, and due to the DNO’s constraints regarding distances between their equipment and the customer's, it was necessary to replace the switchgear to provide sufficient overcurrent and earth fault protection to the network before restoration of the site's secure supply.
Now running on generators, time was critical; however, now aware of the consequences, the site wished to adopt a proactive risk management approach to mitigate the risks of any possible future supply losses. Following a site survey and assessing with the client their business model's needs, both of the site’s transformers were identified as vulnerabilities, and a proposal was put forward to carry out low-voltage diversionary works, enabling the removal of one and replacement of the other, which would manage the vulnerabilities whilst enhancing the robustness of the network.
Quick lead times were now key, being able to manage our own excavations and reinstatement for any jointing and cable laying along with holding equipment stock we were able to carry out all excavation, cable laying and jointing coinciding with supply, delivery and installation of the transformer, low voltage pillar and Hv switch gear over a very short timeframe.
Having contact continuously with the DNO from the outset, outages were arranged with the client and tenants to minimise any further disruption, and supplies were transferred from the generator to the mains, allowing all tenants to plan accordingly. All works were successfully completed, and the ground works were reinstated the following week, much to the customer's delight.
Electrical Engineer James Grigg said:
This project was a fine example of the high-quality, conscientious and efficient service EME Power Systems can provide, ensuring that we can be relied on when it matters most, when your HV network is no longer able to provide the power you rely on.
